Maik
& Joachim will be back in California in about two weeks, delivering
more jumping horses. ``Redhawk`` looks as though he'd started his
winter coat already. Maik says that it gets cold starting this time
of the year in Germany. That's why he comes to California so many
times every year.
Here's
another photo of our newest colt.

Lynn and I arrived home from Germany last night. Although our trip
was successful, it didn't go exactly as planned ... we originally
planned well-needed R&R ... however, this last past week involved
horse related side trips . . . not exactly like a vacation on a
Caribbean beach..
First,
"Dewey Beach" was the top filly in the dressage category at the
Verband Elite Foal Championships in Rheinböllen! Her final score
was 8.93 (out of 10). The jury of judges (Peter Linn, Thomas Casper,
and third judge) really liked "Dewey Beach" -- a lot ! She's by
Y2000 Vice World Champion "D'Olympic" out of "Wanja" ("Wolkenstein
II" x "Rubinstein").
I
took lots of photos that day ... we were fortunate that Beate (Katharina's
Godmother) braided & groomed while Joachim (PhD in Heidelberg) &
his sister, Kerstin (DVM, PhD), handled our mare and foal throughout
the afternoon. They're truly incredible friends.
After
the Foal Championships, we did spend two quiet days at a hotel on
the Mosel River . . . just vegging and walking around town. It's
the heart of the German wine region ... we had a chance to try lots
of super German wines (which are remarkably unlike California wines).
.
Then
we traveled down to the Black Forest .... That's where our itinerary
changed.
Joachim
and Kerstin Gläser drove down from Obermoschel to take us to Gestüt
Schlossaecker where German Federal Champion, "French Kiss," stands.
He's an incredible stallion and we've already bred him to our Trakehner
mare, "LaRochelle," who resides on the Gläser farm.
While
visiting "French Kiss," Katrin Burger and the Gläser's told us we
really needed to "experience" the Baden Württemberg Elite Foal Show
the next day. Well, we could relate to that ... "Dewey Beach" had
completed the Rheinböllen foal show just a few days earlier.
It
turns out that this Baden Württemberg foal show in Riedlinger was
actually a Thursday afternoon foal auction located way, way out
in the remote hinterlands of Southern Germany. In general, the foals
at Riedlinger were absolutely incredible. We purchased three super
foals !
We'll
bring two fillies ( ``Davignon`` x ``Lanciano`` and ``Sir Oldenberg``
x ``Rubinstein I``) home with ``Dewey Beach`` around Thanksgiving,
while leaving our auction colt (``Deniro`` x ``Lanthano`` x ``Tin
Rocco`` x ``Furioso II``) in Germany.
We
didn't get back Obermoschel until 1:30AM on Friday morning. Oh well,
not much R&R that night.
Friday,
we vegged. Saturday we caught a Bullet Train from Frankfurt to Hamburg.
Vicki and Maik picked us up at the train station, we checked into
Schwerin's Niederländischerhof on Karl-Marx Strasse by 4PM.
On
Sunday, we drove to Maik's 220 acre farm. Vicki presented their
11 week old foal (who was champion of his ``keuring`` and qualified
for the All-Germany foal championship). This colt is incredibly
well bred (``Rosario`` x ``Sandro Hit``) and he can really move
! Maik and I shook hands, before celebrating the sale with a champagne
toast. We'll leave him (``Redhawk``) on Maik's farm along with our
Riedlinger colt (``Diego Garcia``) until they are three.
More
news later.
